VFS is a method of visual representation that uses easy-to-understand symbols for the control flow and interlocks, to be used when configuring batch process control systems. As such, it enables more flexible operation compared to conventional methods.

Conventional control systems
- They have been crafted in an elaborate manner so that only persons directly in charge can understand them, and it is difficult to get comments from others.
- There are many ways to represent the same motion, which causes the program configuration to differ. This makes the modifications and debugging difficult.
- There are limitations on conveying information by text, which prevents what workers at the worksite want to do from being fully conveyed. As such, defects are found in many cases involving the required specifications during testing, resulting in a system change.

- It strengthens the exchange of information among the people in charge, and promotes mutual understanding.
- VFS functions as a common language and contributes to the standardization exemplified by S88.
- The know-how of expert operators can be easily organized into a system to help the handing down of technologies.
- Prompt and error-free program correction is possible even when the operation processes are altered.
- At a multi plant for high-mix, low-volume production, a control system may be configured that can be freely rearranged.
