ISOP : Steam Reforming Catalyst

TOYO has developed the ISOP catalyst which is three to four times more active than the conventional steam reforming catalysts in the current market. The high activity of the ISOP catalyst promotes endothermic reaction and significantly improves the characteristics of reaction and heat transfer in steam reformers. Due to these advantages, replacing the conventional steam reforming catalyst with the ISOP catalyst should yield a saving of 2% in the reformer fuel. Other benefits to the steam reformer include extension of the life of the steam reformer tubes by a factor of two or three, or alternatively a 20-30% increase in the throughput of the steam reformer.
The company has a commercial track record in the ISOP catalyst of more than ten years for fuel cell plants. In the field of large scale syngas or hydrogen production plants also, starting with a large ammonia plant in Germany in 1997, the ISOP catalyst has been in commercial operation in Japan, Bangladesh, Germany and Indonesia. The ISOP catalyst has been authorized by Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), the largest licensor of ammonia process.
The superiority of the ISOP catalyst is also highly regarded by the Catalyst Society of Japan and by The Japan Petroleum Institute. The both social organizations independently granted their highest awards to the ISOP catalyst in 2000. TOYO has licensed the manufacturing right of the ISOP catalyst to Sued-chemie Catalyst Japan Ltd. and Sued-chemie Catalyst, Inc. of U.S.A.

The TOYO adiabatic reformer (TAS-R) is available as a process option using the ISOP catalyst and taking advantage of its high level of activity and thermal stability., By integrating TAS-R in to the steam reforming system the energy efficiency can be enhanced through recovery of heat from the flue gas of the steam reformer for TAS-R in addition to reducing the load on the steam reformer and enhancing the performance of the plant.
